Treatment is available for many substances. A comprehensive plan that addresses both substance use and mental health problems will be provided.
Opioids include pain relief prescription medications like oxycodone and morphine as well as street drugs like fentanyl and heroin. Treatment may include Methadone, Suboxone, Sublocade, Kadian (SROM), and Safer Opioid Supply (Dilaudid/hydromorphone). Sometimes these medications may be combined for treatment.
Anti-craving medications and other treatment is available for alcohol, benzodiazepines, cocaine / methamphetamine / stimulants, cannabis, tobacco, gambling, and others. Counseling is often combined with medications.
A concurrent disorder refers to when a person has both substance use and a mental health problem at the
same time. Self medication of mental health problems with substances is common and may lead to
addiction. Common co-occurring mental health problems may include anxiety, depression, ADHD,
PTSD/trauma, and others.
All patients are screened for mental health problems. If a diagnosis is made, treatment with counseling
and/or medications will be offered. Concurrent disorders have better outcomes when 1 doctor treats the
mental health and addiction together, rather than multiple doctors with separate treatments.
